My Essential Nintendo Switch 2 Accessories List

Daydreaming about accessories I would buy if I got the Nintendo Switch 2.

In excitement of the Nintendo Switch 2 release, even though I do not own the new console, I made a list of accessories I considered essential, nice-to-have, and unnecessary for me to enjoy the new console. Maybe one day I will own the Switch 2. For now, it is fun to daydream.

In case it's helpful, below are the main points covered in this post:

My Essential Accessories List

When I one day own a Nintendo Switch 2, there are three accessories I consider essential for enjoying a portable console and traveling with it safely:

1 - Slim Hardshell Carrying Case

Because I often take my current Nintendo Switch on the go, I consider keeping it safe during transport essential. A slim hardshell carrying case is ideal for an extended picnic at the park or a day trip away from the house.

There are many options already available for purchase prior to the release of the Nintendo Switch 2. I had my eye on a cheap-ish Onn brand hardshell carrying case for $18 USD available at my local Walmart. Unfortunately, this product does not include a screen protector.

2 - Screen Protector

If the console's screen is lightly scratched or cracked as is, I would have to send the console somewhere for repairs. However, I could easily and cheaply replace a scratched or cracked screen protector. Although minor screen damage is rare for me, I consider a screen protector essential for an expensive console.

There are many options available for under $15 USD. Target is selling a Hori Nintendo Switch Screen Protective Filter for $8 USD on sale. I prefer tempered glass over cheaper plastic screen protectors. Fortunately, I have an old tempered glass screen protector that I will cut down to size using a sharp craft knife.

3 - MicroSDXC Express Card

Storage concerns me, especially with the potential size of current and future Nintendo Switch 2 games. I also take a lot of gameplay screenshots to use as wallpapers for my mobile devices.

Since I tend to forget to delete screenshots, and I have no idea how many games I would own after the new console's launch, having the supported microSDXC express card is essential for my peace of mind.

The Nintendo Switch 2 console will NOT support any microSD card. Only a "microSDXC express" card will work with the console. Many sold out online in anticipation of the console's release, but they resurface for sale every now and then.

I had my eye on an Onn brand 512GB microSDXC express card at my local Walmart. It is the cheapest price I have seen for this card size at $66 USD. Hopefully, a 512GB card size is enough for the handful of games and thousands of screenshots I will eventually have on my console.

My Nice-to-Have Accessories List

Although it is not essential for me to enjoy using and travelling with a portable console, there are three accessories that would make my gameplay and traveling experience a tad better:

1 - All-in-one Hardshell Carrying Case

Although I could easily pack a slim hardshell carrying case into a backpack or suitcase, it would be convenient to have an all-in-one hardshell carrying case for all my console's accessories. This would be ideal for extended trips resulting in multiple overnight stays.

The Gorixer Switch Case through Amazon caught my eye because it includes insert pads to support the smaller Nintendo Switch OLED model. Since getting the new console is not a reality at this time, the insert pads will allow me to use this case for my OLED model. It is currently $39 USD.

2 - Pro Controller

I was fortunate to use the pro controller during My Nintendo Switch 2 Experience. While my small-ish hands can handle the Joy Cons with comfort, the pro controller felt significantly better in my hands. While it is not essential to have, I definitely want it!

Many influencers said the new pro controller feels sturdier and better in the hands. Since I have no experience with the previous version, I believe the new pro controller is worth my while. Every retailer is selling the new Nintendo brand pro controller for $85 USD, including Best Buy.

3 - AC Adaptor

Would it hurt to have two AC adapters for charging the console? Well, it may hurt my wallet, but I believe it would be convenient to have a second adapter to use as I see fit. I would keep one in my carrying case since I have forgotten to pack a charging cable in the past.

Because I have bought third-party adapters that never worked with my console, a Nintendo brand AC adapter seems like the safest bet at $35 USD. I may hit up my local Best Buy for this one.

My Nonessential Accessories List

Below are three accessories that will have no impact on my ability to enjoy the console or keep it safe during travel:

1 - Thumbstick Grips

I love customizing my tech, and thumbstick grips are a fun way to add my personality to my console. I currently have glow-in-the-dark grips for my OLED. It does minimize the chances of my thumbs slipping off the stick during gameplay (although my thumb never slipped before owning any grips).

If I got thumbstick grips for the new console, I would get decorative ones like smiley faces, paw prints, and Pokeballs. I do not know if the old Nintendo Switch thumbstick grips will fit the sticks of the new console. If they do, it looks like I can get a set of four for about $10 USD from Amazon depending on the design.

2 - Dock

The dock packaged with the new console would be set up for use with my living room TV. While I could easily move it elsewhere, the lazy part of me believed it would be nice to have a second dock set up in a second location like my bedroom or at my Mom's house.

Realistically, I do not see myself buying this at $120 USD for the Nintendo brand dock. However, if I could find a cheaper third-party alternative guaranteed to work properly, or if the Nintendo brand dock went on sale, I would consider buying it for the lazy convenience of setting it up in a second room.

3 - Skin

Because I love customizing my tech, I want to decorate my console. The right skin is a great temporary solution that [ideally] would not void the warranty. I have used skins that peeled off cleanly and others that left residue or damaged a device’s surface.

Skinit skins are some that I have successfully peeled off cleanly. I have purchased from this website since the 2010's. They do not currently have skins for the Nintendo Switch 2 currently, but I assume they would cost $35 USD when the option is available.

What's Next?

While I do not currently own a Nintendo Switch 2 console, I will continue to daydream and keep an eye out for my ideal accessories! Next, I will daydream about Nintendo Switch 2 games I want to own and play.
