Why not do nothing all day today?

Need an excuse to spend a whole day doing nothing? Then do nothing on January 16th! Of course, that is easier said then done.

In case it's helpful, below are the topics covered in this post:

About This Day

Two years ago, I wrote about how National Nothing Day was proposed by columnist Harold Pullman in 1972 as an anti-holiday, or an act of rebellion, to counter the many random days of celebrations like Museum Selfie Day (January 17th) or National Green Juice Day (January 26th). The point of this holiday was to celebrate NO holiday or event on this day.

Before I wrote my previous post, I thought National Nothing Day promoted doing nothing worthwhile in life for a day. Some online sources claimed that doing nothing was the whole point of this holiday. I was stunned to learn after researching the holiday that my initial thought was wrong.

How to Alternatively Celebrate This Day

For the purpose of today's post, I propose that we aim to do absolutely nothing today. Treat it as a self-care day. Do nothing that will stress you out!

Obviously, that is easier said than done. Many must return to school, work, or something that requires attention and cannot be put off. Even if you spent the day home to binge watch your favorite program, you are still doing something.

In these situations, consider doing nothing that has to be done today. Put off non-essential tasks until tomorrow if possible.

For example, do you have a project due at the end of the week? Depending on how much you have left to do with it, consider putting it off until tomorrow. Focus on other important things today so you can return to the project refreshed and energized tomorrow.

After a crazy start to 2024 with my Mom admitted into the ICU and an unexpected rush to the veterinary's office for my small dog's respiratory issues, I am spending this week keeping an eye on my recovering Mom and dog.

I obviously cannot do nothing, but I plan to do nothing other than care for my Mom, dog, and myself today. There is nothing pressing that has to be done other than make sure my Mom and dog take their drugs, so any other tasks like checking/responding to emails, updating my website, and other tasks can wait until tomorrow.

NOTE: If you are procrastinator, you may want to ignore this random day of celebration. What are you waiting for? Get started on that project already!!!

What's Next?

I choose to celebrate National Nothing Day not the way columnist Harold Pullman intended, but in my own way by being lazy whenever possible.
