Serendipity Day is celebrated annually on August 18th. This is a great opportunity to appreciate happy accidents and strokes of good luck.

In case it's helpful, below are the main points covered in this post:

About This Day

Horace Walpole, an English write, coined the term in the mid-1700s while referencing the Persian fairy tale, The Three Princes of Serendip. The tale depicts three princes encountering fortunate chances after being banished from the kingdom of Serendip (now known as Sri Lanka). Thus, the term serendipitous was created.

Serendipity Day was created by Madeleine Kay. Madeline is an American author who encourages and motivates people to "live serendipitously" and make the day extraordinary. This day takes advantage of looking at things from an optimistic mindset.

How to Celebrate

While many consider serendipity a lucky coincidence, a sharp mind could recognize a positive, unexpected opportunity. The goal is to be open-minded and aware of what is taking place around you.

Below are ways you can celebrate Serendipity Day:

  • Loosen or stray slightly from your routine daily schedule.

  • Do something you always wanted to do but put off for whatever reason.

  • Be open-minded.

  • Embrace "happy accidents."

  • Embrace your curiosity.

  • Embrace zany and weird occurrences.

  • Be silly.

  • Take an unexpected detour or new route.

  • Do something outside your comfort zone.

  • Do a random act of kindness for someone you know or a stranger.

What's Next?

Celebrate Serendipity Day by, as Madeleine Kay says, "keeping the wonder alive." Embrace the unexpected!
