5 Simple Settings I Changed on My Nintendo Switch 2

Maybe I will change more settings in the future as I get to know the system better.

After receiving my Nintendo Switch 2 pre-order on launch day, I immediately changed five things in the "System Settings." I am certain there will be other changes I make to the system settings later on. For now, I am satisfied with the changes made.

In case it's helpful, below are the main points covered in this post:

Users

As the sole owner and player of my new Nintendo Switch 2, it is not necessary for me to select a user every time I want to do certain things on my system. Fortunately, the system allows me to enable the "Skip User Selection." Now, I am no longer required to select a user unnecessarily since I am the only one using my system.

System Settings > Users > Skip User Selection

Dark Mode

I prefer using dark mode on digital screens as it is less likely to irritate my eyes and migraines. It took me a moment to find the setting because it was not under "Display" as I initially assumed, but I was able to switch the setting from "Basic Light" to "Basic Dark."

System Settings > Themes > Basic Dark

Battery Charging

To promote extended battery lifespan, I chose to enable the "Stop Charging Around 90%" instead of letting the system charge to 100%. This is especially beneficial for lithium-ion batteries, which the Nintendo Switch 2 has, as it reduces the chance for degradation and overheating.

My system's battery typically only reaches 86% before it stops charging. I have yet to see it charge closer to 90% with this setting change, but that does not bother me. To see the exact battery percentage onscreen, I also enabled "System Battery (%)."

System Settings > System > Stop Charging Around 90%

Lock Screen

Despite being the sole user of my new system, I prefer to lock my devices to deter idiots from accessing my games, settings, and eShop. Fortunately, the new system now allows me to enable the "System Lock" feature using a custom determined PIN! Now, when I start my system, I press the same button three times followed by a PIN screen. The PIN had to be four to eight numbers.

System Settings > System > System Lock

HDR

HDR (High Dynamic Range) improves the visual quality of gameplay visuals on the system in handheld mode and when docked for use on an HDR-compatible TV. Once I enabled "HDR Output," I quickly noticed that it did not look great on my TV with a Switch 1 game that was never designed to be HDR-compatible.

Because one of my games looked off with HDR, I changed the settings to HDR with "Compatible Software Only." Now, Mario Kart World looks amazing with HDR, and Animal Crossing New Horizons looks as good (if not slightly better?) than my old OLED system.

With time and more use, I am certain there will be other changes I make to the system settings later on. For now, I am satisfied with the changes made.
