Craft Projects I Hesitate to Start

Maybe I will start these projects before the year ends.

There are a few craft projects I have yet to attempt either because I am missing a few supplies or hesitate to give it a try. Below are four projects I have hesitated to get started.

In case it's helpful, below are the topics covered in this post:

Book Binding

I purchased a book binding supplies kit two years ago to make my own hardcover watercolor book. While I was excited to use the kit, it remained it storage all this time.

So, why have I hesitated to start this project?

Life presented some challenges in the latter half of 2022 through early 2024, and I forgot all about the kit until I re-organized my craft room a few weeks ago.

In researching how to bind a book using various stitching methods, I learned that I need a few more supplies:

  • Linen or cotton tape

  • Mull (cloth)

  • Beeswax

The thread included in the kit are already pre-waxed, but I read online that it does not hurt to have some beeswax just-in-case.

I have all the other supplies I need to get started. I hope to start my first 'coptic stitch' hard cover book soon.

Tumbler Turning

My Dad gifted me a multi-cup tumbler turner for my birthday last year. This would be a great way to seal and protect hand painted mugs and tumblers with epoxy resin.

I buy mugs and tumblers from my local dollar store and have a few stored in my craft room awaiting a custom paint job or vinyl design.

Why have I hesitated to start this project?

I did not have enough epoxy resin after completing a DIY L-shaped desk for my craft room. The brand epoxy resin I used was not cheap and I did not see a need to buy more for the longest time.

I plan to get more epoxy resin to complete several projects this summer. This time around, I will dedicate enough epoxy resin to give tumbler turning a try.

3D Pen Art

My niece gifted me a 3D doodle pen for my birthday several years ago. The set includes everything I need to get started with my first 3D pen creation.

Why have I hesitated to start this project?

Around the time I received the 3D doodle pen, I was hyper focused on other crafts that took me time to learn. Like my book binding kit, I forgot all about the 3D pen until I re-organized my craft room a few weeks ago.

I plan to research how to use a 3D pen before I attempt it for myself. I already have a few project ideas I want to attempt. I am curious to see how poorly or well I do!

Pottery Wheel Craft

My Dad gifted me a motorized pottery wheel that he bought on sale for a few dollars early last year. He knew using a pottery wheel was a craft project I have always wanted to try.

Why have I hesitated to start this project?

It looks like a cheaply made product that will rock, wobble, and not spin well enough for me (or a child) to create a decent item. It may die completely after a few minutes of use. I believe I will find this pottery wheel annoying to use.

I never intended to use this pottery wheel. I figured I would re-gift it, donate it to the local thrift store, or pick out any items (not the motorized wheel!) that I want to hold on to.

My nephew gifted me the exact same pottery wheel for my birthday last year. Now have I two of these potentially awful products in storage!

I will re-gift or donate one, but I may unbox and use the other. I may be amused by it. It could make for a fun "failed" video for my YouTube channel.

What's Next?

Do you have any unopened craft kits or unused supplies around your home? Take a moment to identify why you have not touched it, what is needed to start using it, and whether or not it is something you can see yourself using in the future. Sometimes thinking about something is all you need to motivate yourself to do it!

Comment below to which arts and crafts project you have hesitated to attempt!

Thanks, and have a great day!
