Do you have days when you want to play a cozy video game while you relax after a stressful day? Hidden object games are a great way to chill, relax, and unwind. All you do, for the most part, is point-and-click. Below are some of my favorite hidden object games in my Steam library.

In case it's helpful, below are the main points covered in this post:

What is a Hidden Object Game?

A hidden object game has players search for hidden items within a visually detailed scene. Players are given an image, word, silhouette, or description of items to find.

Some hidden objects are simple point-and-click games. Some include puzzles or other mini games. Some have a progressive storyline to hook a player.

100 [Something] Cats

Developer: 100 Cozy Games

I used [Something] in the header because there are multiple variations of the game. Below are a few titles to help illustrate what I am trying to say:

  • 100 Aliens Cats

  • 100 Christmas Cats

  • 100 Italy Cats

  • 100 Ninja Cats

  • 100 Underworld Cats

There are so many titles to choose from! Several of the older titles like 100 Asian Cats are free to play, but you could pay for an extra level. The newer titles require a purchase upfront, but $2 USD is not bad for most budgets.

I love that these are simple point-and-click games. You can zoom in, zoom out, and scroll to search for cats. There is a hint feature that highlights an area for you to narrow the search. It is a quick play session to finish a level or game.

Find Kittens/Find All

Developer: Very Very LITTLE Studio

Like the previous games I mentioned, there are many titles to choose from. Like the 100 Cats' games, the Find Kittens' games allow you to zoom in, zoom out, and scroll to search for cats. There is a hint feature that highlights an area for you to narrow the search. The games can be finished in one sitting (under an hour is a lot of cases).

The Find All games have you searching for more than cats or kittens. In fact, you are searching for three sets of items at a time.

For example, you may be prompted to find envelopes, balloons, and spiders at one time. The item set changes after you complete finding all items of a set. For example, if you found all the balloons, you would then be prompted to search for teapots.

You can zoom in, zoom out, scroll, and use the hint feature to search for items in most titles. There are a few titles where you cannot zoom at all.

Find All 2: Middle Ages is one where you cannot zoom. However, there is a whack-a-mole type of mini-game halfway through and a puzzle at the end. It is my favorite title because I enjoy the mini game. The puzzle is meh.

The Find All games are replayable. The items you are prompted to search for are randomized. So, if you reset the game for a fresh start, you may be prompted to search for completely different sets of items than your first playthrough. Some titles record your time, so you can replay a level or game to beat your previous time.

This game developer also has another game titled ToriDori and ToriDori 2. Unlike the previous games I mentioned that only allow you to scroll to search, this allows you to rotate to search for various items from different angles of a 3D map.

A [Something] Full of Cats

Developer: Devcats

Once again, there are many titles to choose from. The [Something] refers to a location. For example, A Building Full of Cats 2 kept me busy for hours. There were at least eleven levels. There may be more, but I have not figured out how to unlock or solve them yet.

You can zoom in, zoom out, scroll, and use the hint feature to search for cats. Some of the cats are hidden, meaning you must click on random items to see if a cat pops out to be selected.

For most titles, you search for more than just cats. You may be prompted to search for batteries or keys. In a few cases, you may not realize you should be searching for an item until you randomly click on it and receive a sound effect or popup something-or-other.

My favorite title is An Arcade Full of Cats. It includes hidden object mini-games (you must search for coins to play the mini-games on select arcade machines). It also allows you to record and beat your best time, adding a bit to the replayability of the game.

Nippets

Developer: Very Positive

If you are interested in playing Nippets, but not yet sure you want to buy it, check out the free demo on Steam. I enjoyed the demo enough to buy the full game.

Unlike the previous games I previously mentioned, you are prompted with a broken outline of the items you must search for. When you hover over the item's image, you get to read a hint about where to find it. There are no additional hint features.

Because there are no additional hint features, I found myself clicking on almost everything. Doing so informed me that there were achievements I could complete.

The completionist in me wanted to achieve EVERYTHING. So, I spent an unnecessary amount of time shaking trees, poking people, petting cats, and chasing birds.

You can zoom in, zoom out, and scroll to search for items. In some cases, you need to poke, prod, and shake things to find hidden items. If you play this game, check every window. You may be able to slide them open to see inside a room.

Honorable Mention: Thingamajigs (Developer: Tea Imp Games) is very, very similar to Nippets. At the time of writing this post, the full game is not available. However, I recommend playing the demo.

Hidden Through Time

Developer: Rogueside

I completed this game last week and just started Hidden Through Time 2: Discovery. You are prompted to search for items, each of which provides text hints about where to find them.

You get to see what the items look like (no broken outlines), but you have no additional hint features. It is another game where you must click on everything to find hidden items.

There are SO MANY LEVELS! It took me hours to complete just the main story, but there were other 'stories' with many more levels. The "Map Editor" allowed you to create and design your own level. I have not done much with it, but it looks like a fun way to add more gameplay to a game that already has a lot to it.

Lost and Found Co.

Developer: Bit Egg Inc.

Like Nippets, I played the demo and enjoyed it enough to buy the full game. Unlike Nippets, there is surprisingly a lot of content for a demo. I assume there will be a significant amount of content in the full version resulting in hours of gameplay.

You are prompted to search for items, each of which provides text hints about where to find them. You can find hidden 'demon' items (I forgot what they are called) to unlock an additional hint for each item. Otherwise, it is another poke, prod, and shake things to find hidden items.

This is the next hidden object game I plan to play over the winter holiday.

What's Next?
